  1. As usual, Ong Jon has provided excellent advice.

Another thought to consider is to ask a Viet friend or acquaintance if they can recomend someone. Unless the person you ask is an orphaned, only child, I garantee that they have family in Vietnam. That would be the best way to see the country, your friend's relative would be duty bound to ensure that you had an enjoyable time.

My first trip to Vn was with a Viet friend, Now I bring friends over. Even If I can't go, I'll send them over knowing that they will be well looked after by my family and friends.

  2. You'd better go to www.trafest.com to find well qualified and experienced guides in Vietnam, who used to work as trip leaders for American A&K travel, Travcoa and Overseas Adventure Travel. Trafest will give you A-Z support as they know how to help you understand Vietnam without following trails of classic tours.

As Vietnam opens its doors to welcome the world at large, many people are finally discovering the stunning beauty and unique traditional culture that lie beyond the threshold. To many, the name Vietnam brings to mind only haunting images of a war-torn land in some remote corner of Southeast Asia.  But beyond such images  lies the real Vietnam, an amazing land of great physical beauty and friendly people whose  rich cultural diversity history spans over 2000 years.

Picture a land of idyllic tree-lined beaches, tranquil bays dotted with sails of junks and sampans, offshore coral islands, mountains, valleys, primal forests, plains crossed by countless rivers and emerald rice fields enriched with the varied scene of everyday life. Experience the traditional rural life, embodied with the villagers tilling the land with rudimentary tools under their conical hats in the patch work paddy fields, and children riding their water buffalos home from the fields at the end of the day.  Discover how this dramatically contrasts with the sights, sounds and pace of the cities where  colorful streets overflow with humanity borne along on an endless flow of bicycles and motorscooters.

Such are the images of Amazing Vietnam!

Trafest will show you how to travel, to eat out, to cook and to live as a Vietnamese person.

  3. if your talking about a company guided tour they are all about the same, tm bros, sinh cafe, etc. they will take you around according to plan and pass you by a few other stops to eat and buy souvenirs at "their friends places"  that's par for the course everywhere... i only go on those kind of tours to kill time or if there is no other practical way to get where i'm going.

if you are talking about a private local tour guide, perhaps a xich lo driver or moto bike driver who offers to take you around "the city" they are usually all ok and will do what they say . hOWEVER, be VERY specific about where you are going , how long you will be out, what you will be doing, when you want to be back and most of all THE PRICE. that said , and i mean even if you get it in writing [ and i often do]  it is VERY common for a guide to want to "re negotiate" the price when you get back ...  if this happens ,stick to your guns !!!be calm dont argue and just walk away. this advice is especially important if you are going out w/  an "easy rider" [ guys who will take you on a 2,3,4, day moto bike trip.

renting a car and driver is the most predictable , they always do what is planned and for a set price... well almost always...... if you tell me where you are going and what you want to do i may be able to recommend someone specific...
