We are trying to find out if there are grants available that will help us to update our home. The insulation hasn't been replaced since 1955, there is no insulation at all on our bedroom and bathroom floors, the windows are very old and not airtight. We would like to replace our water heater with a tankless one, and we also need to upgrade our heating and air conditioning. Also, we need to make both doors and paths handicapped accessible. There are steps to both doors and gravel paths which my wheelchair has to be carried over. There are also a few other repairs that need to be done. We are both disabled veterans, and I am 100% service connected disabled. I'm also on Social Security Disability. Where do we look for a grant that will fit our needs? There are a lot of web sites about them, but I know a lot of them are scams. Thanks for any help. :)

  1. As Suez stated, you need to hit your local Community Service org.... they are also called Community Action Agencies, more often than not.  CAA's administer over 90% of all Community Service Block Grants from the federal government... which makes them the best place to start looking for help.  Quite often, they will also be aware of what other charities are operating in your area, and can also put you in touch with them  (for example, getting some help installing ramps, etc)

Here is a bit about what they do -

    Good Luck

  2. check with senior citizens center in your area

  3. go to the HUD for info on grants and low or no interest loans

  4. I live in California, I work for the Community Development Commission. Our agency offers a number of grants for a variety of home repairs. Each states has an agencies with money divide by each city. If they do not have the handicapped accessibility they should know what community service agency that does.
