Question:

How can I find a host family in Italy?

I want to find a host family from September 12, 2008 to November 29, 2008 in Bologna, Italy.

Many language schools offer this as an added service, but I want to arrange my stay independently.

As a 23 year old native English speaker, I have a lot to offer a potential host family. However, I have not found any websites on which Italian families post "exchange student WANTED" ads.

Thank you.

  1. Generally, you go with the families who are signed up with the program.  That's how the connections are made, not through anonymous ads.  Just think about it.  Single, 21 - 23 year old woman, trusting, looking for a place to live.  Single, 70 year old man puts an ad in the paper saying he's a family, she shows up on his doorstep...just a hypothetical situation, but, far too easy to abuse that way.  With a program, there are (you hope) trustworthy people to set things up, make sure you are happy and comfortable, not being abused in any way (okay, doesn't have to be that ominous, the family might expect you to take care of their children for free, leaving you with no time to have fun or travel, etc.)  make sure you have the things you need, and all.  They screen the families, and you know what you are getting yourself into.  Families are not allowed to take advantage of you, etc.

I don't think you're going to find a trustworthy family in the newspaper or on line.
