Question:

How can I find a paid job that enables me to help educate people to re use-recycle rather than replace?

I feel really strongly about the amount of "stuff" that society wastes and would love to find paid employment in this field. My family of 3 adults recycles, composts and usually puts out a medium sized bin bag each week whereas the couple across the road regularly have as many as 10 bags! Admittedly they do have a baby but surely nappies don't add 9 bags a week do they? I know terry nappies (like I used for my kids) create far less rubbish and don't hang around on landfill sites either! We NEED to educate everyone, families, individuals, businesses etc that our world does not have infinite resources and we have a huge responsibility to use them wisely. Any help greatfully appreciated, thanks!

  1. Some summer camps focus on ecology, and likely need "counselors".

Many jobs educating people may be easier to get with a doctor's degree, especially if in a related field.

If you can write a book, that might provide an income, while establishing you as an "expert" that others may call on.  A regular newspaper (or web) article could have the same effect.

  2. Get in contact with your local council waste depot

    and get a job there.

Then start making your ideas known

if no joy with implementing, try communicating via the major, the head of the council, your local newspaper...

  3. http://planetgreen.discovery.com/tv/wast...

try this website. It has lot's of good info.

  4. I volunteer for my local utility. We have an energy exploration center. I know some of the people who work there are paid. We have community outreach personell who go to school and businesses to help teach people how to recycle and dispose of hazardous waste properly.

I think if the helpful tips were offered for free you are more likely to reach a broader audiance.

I guess you could advertise yourself in the paper like those personal organizers.

  5. I agree with you wholeheartedly.  I live in a house with two other adults and not always, but regularly, put out as little as one garbage bag per month.  They make jokes to their friends that "Yes we recycle, HE MAKES US!"

The "paid job" is the difficult part.

Many cities and power companies have 3R programs in place to help people reduce both their waste and their consumption.  There are also private companies that will do consumption and waste audits for businesses, that information can also be applied in the home.

In order to get a paying job with those organizations you would need a strong background in the field or a formal education.

In the meantime, perhaps you can just email "The Story of Stuff" to all your  friends and let them see the problems created by Consumerism.

  6. Hm. Write a couple of articles, then send them to places like colleges and libraries and say that you will speak to the public for ___ amount of money.

The best way to begin is to educate people for no pay, and go from there. Eventually I'm sure you'll find a contact that can get you a job doing it.

  7. We volunteer sustainable home building projects in needing countries, and offer an internship program where the interns can help out also, if you’re interested. Go to www agua-luna com if to find out more.

Internships are unpaid positions. Interns are responsible for providing their own accommodations, food, transportation, supplies, etc. or primitive camping and meals are available at no charge on-site.

During the session interns may attend any scheduled on-site workshops and seminars. Upon completion of the session interns receive a Certificate of Clean Green Building, and the new found skills of environmental construction.

Each session will start with a brief orientation meeting at the AguaLuna Visitors Center. This will include a small tour of the AguaLuna Ranch, projects and potential work sites, showing a few finished projects as well as the job site where you will show up for work at 9 am the next day.

Expect to be challenged physically and mentally, to work hard and play hard. Some have found it difficult to be away from their homes and jobs for a month. 8. You could become an entrepeurner  and make money showing what you think and ways to combat enviromental issues and design products that do so. (etc...etc...etc...) Or you could write articles, become and enviromental presenter on TV, work for D.E.F.R.A and even work for the concil. There are plenty of options, but you need to find one that suits you.

  9. visit agua-luna.com it's a pretty cool organization that really does their homework on being green.  they have a ranch that employ some people, but it's mostly volenteer where you participate and develope green living technichs.  anyway hope you like the site.

  10. Difficult one re getting paid...

Try looking on your local, county council websites, some may have a suitable post.

    Others are to promote Freecycle

letter write to your local politicians etc

Re recycling the many items that just get dumped at council recycling centres (that could be used again rather than recycled for their raw materials)

Send information with the next council tax bill etc

If your in the UK, type CAT into google.

  11. I don't know where you live but my local council advertised just such a job -( I think they wanted 3 people ) just a couple of weeks ago.  All councils in Scotland have recycling targets and will be looking for people who can help achieve them.

Sorry I didn't keep the newspaper add or I could have given you a job title or reference.
