At my home in Ohio, I have a half Great Pyrenees and half Newfoundland dog. I just moved out to California for college and I miss my puppy so much...and I am thinking of getting a new one. I was wondering if there was some search method or anything that could help me get this specific breed because I would really like the same breed :( Anything will help!

  1. Having a large breed dog is a lifetime commitment.  While you have just moved to CA for college, your time needs to be reserved for your college studies.  I know you miss your family dog, but I don't see how you can do well in college and give a new dog or pup the time s/he requires.  There's too high a risk that you'll either neglect the dog or neglect your studies.  Either or both those options are unacceptable.  Your job right now is to do the best you can in your studies.  Raising a new dog will detract from you doing that job properly.

A pyr/newfie is not a "specific breed" as you know.  It's a dog that will be large because both parents are large breeds.  It needs a lot of time and exercise.  It needs a well fenced yard.

I know some people who have pyr/newfie cross pups, but I cannot recommend them in good conscience because you cannot give the dog the time and attention it needs if you're going to do well in college.  It would be grossly unfair to the dog, and to your parents who are paying good money for your college education.  Starting college is a time of emotional turmoil.  You need to learn new study habits.  You won't have the physical or emotional resources to be a good dog owner.

Have your family email you photos of your dog.

Learn how to deal with this temporary separation on your own.

    Do NOT get a dog.

    - this is the wrong time

    - your time needs to be put into your studies  -!-

  2. A half pyrenees, half newfie is not a breed, so you won't find a breeder.  What you will find is a breeder for either breed by itself.  You really can't go wrong with either breed, they are both incredibly sweet, family oriented, gifted with soft, plush coats, and calm dispositions.  The primary differences will be in size and color, with Newfies being slightly smaller, black or dark brown, and possibly less inclined to drool.  There is a variation of the Newfie called a Landseer that is black and white, they're quite beautiful if you don't prefer the solid colors.  The pyrenees will always be white, and very, very large.  They have characteristic double dewclaws and may not be quite as active as a newfoundland.

In California, though, give a lot of thought to the heat, as these dogs tend to be less tolerant of high temperatures.  If it lives in the house it shouldn't be too big a problem, but make sure you provide a plastic kiddie pool for the dog to lie in if it gets too hot.  They will absolutely love that.  :)

Best of luck in finding the puppy of your dreams!

  3. Why don't you bring your other dog with you? Also, you are going to find it EXTREMELY difficult to find rentals in California that will allow you a 100lb dog. Trust me, even 60lbs is hard to house out here. Unless you are very wealthy, you may have a great deal of trouble fulfilling your lifelong commitment to a dog while going through college and the challenges of building a new career. If you must get another dog, check out petfinder.com, and rescue a dog that needs a home.

  4. I understand you like that breed of dog, but breeds only have characteristics that are typical of that breed.  Not all dogs are the same so having a dog of that breed may not be as cool as the one you had!

Instead of trying to search for one (which you can try to do online, just type in the breeds and see if anything pops up) and maybe having to buy it, why not go to an animal shelter and save a dog there that needs a new home?  I would do it myself but I live in an apartment that doesn't allow pets, sadly.  You can find a dog that suits your personality, rather than for the looks of the dog.  Good luck, I hope you can find your new perfect friend!

  5. I like the personality of a great pyrenees. They are so sweet.

  6. go to puppyfind.com or bring one out to you

  7. check out your local shelter first

if not try labs malmutes chiuauahs...idk how to spell it or dauchsunds
