Question:

How can I find a wedding dress that works with my figure?

I have a difficult wedding dress figure. I'm an inverted triangle by most standards... large bust area, small waist, small hips. I've looked at a million gowns and am having a difficult time finding something that works with my figure.

The biggest hassle is my b***s. I'm a D which I know is just a cup size above average and I don't notice the top heaviness in daily wear. But the moment I tried on an all-white dress!!! BAM!!! There they are!

I've tried balancing it out with a ballroom skirt but my groom & I are the same height I am and the "poofiness" drowns him out in photographs. It's an outdoor garden wedding so I was shooting for an A-line.

Have any of you ladies run into the same dilemma? What worked for you?

  1. For your figure your best bet would be to go for an A-line but with the laces on the back. You can cinch the laces to make the dress tight on your waist and loose on your bust.  You can go to www.shellyleppertdesigns.com and they can help you pick out a dress and they have beautiful dresses you can choose from at great prices.

  2. Try a strapless dress with a princess cut skirt. If the top is tight enough to stay up and hold you in it can minimize the bust a bit. The princess cut skirt will give you the fullness you desire without drowning your husband out.

  3. Have you tried princess seams? They tend to make your curves look a set way, no matter how big (or small) they actually are.

Rather than getting a lacy top to your dress or using a shawl, have something that's all one piece over the bodice to smooth everything over.

And the last thing - Are you looking down at yourself or checking in the mirror? I make this mistake all the time, thinking I'm dressed horribly, and wondering how I got out the house that way. Then I look in a mirror (like I do in the morning) and see that there's nothing really sticking out.

  4. I have the same body type minus the b***s.  Go for an a-line as you don't need more emphasis in that area.  Also, avoid anything that will bring too much attention to your bottom area...such as a hunched up skirt, lines, or lace.  Don't do ballroom skirts as it will make you look wider.  I would go for a straight line skirt and something that points to your waiste...maybe styles like this:

  5. Here's some advice from sites about dresses to reduce the appearance of larger b*****s. :) Good luck!

"Fuller busted:  Bridal corsets can work magic.  You will find reputable names under bridal supplies or bridal accessories. Wedding dresses that are scoop and square necklines enhance bust lines. Widely set apart straps diminish fuller busted figures. Strapless dresses are on your wedding checklist as a “wait and see how it looks possibility”.

"If You Are Big Busted, you may wish to stay with elongated bodices and necklines that are V-or U shaped or high with a keyhole yoke. Avoid cinched waists, empire styles that come up high under the bust, and clingy fabrics that accentuate your fullness. Choose instead full, billowing skirts with lots of ornamentation, which will create a curvier lower body. Keep sleeves simple with a natural shoulder line, and avoid adornments on the bodice."

Good luck, it may take a bit of trial and error, but I'm sure you will find the perfect gown! :)

  6. have you tried a dress with a halter top go to davids bridal.com and look up this style number v9476 that might work well for you.

  7. well I'm an hourglass shape with DD boobies and i went with a strapless A line.  the dress itself held up the girls (you can also get a bra put in by the seamstress if needed) and the fullness of the skirt hid my hips so that both you and I would look similar...big on top and bottom covered by a full skirt.  but its not so full that it will overtake hubby.  I would just avoid a halter dress.  it will likely make your b***s look huge and your shoulders very wide.

  8. Here is some interesting information that I was able to find in regards to finding a dress style:

My friend had the same problem. She eventually ended up getting a gown that had a pick up skirt on it. It looked really great on her.

Like you said, the ballroom dresses are recommended for a larger bust - but for a garden wedding and the poofiness I don't know. Here is on that might work. It's not quite as poofy:

Or, maybe you could try a move sheath looking style. Since you have the small waist and hips it should look really nice. Maybe something like this:

Just keep trying on different gowns...eventually you will find one that flatters your figure perfectly. Sometimes it takes people longer to find a dress then others.

    Good luck to you!

  9. The best thing for you to do is grab some of your most honest girlfriends and go to Davids Bridal.  Have them each pick out three dresses, all different styles.  Try them all on and have one girl be the official picture taker.

Once you've tried all the dresses on and gotten honest feedback from them, take a look at the pictures and decide which cut looks best on you.

That's what I did and believe it or not, the dress I ended up getting was one I hadn't ever clicked on to view larger online!

The point is...you have to try on a million dresses to find the cut that looks right.  Once you have the cut, you can ask the bridal assitant or shop person to get you all the dresses that are cut the same way.

Also, when dress shopping, make SURE you wear make up and do your hair.  It makes the decision easier.

Have fun and don't forget the camera~

  10. you can custom-made the dress,there is one site,you can check that,they have lots of dresses,also custom-made.
