Try the French phone directory :

Next to "nom" you type his last name

Next to "prénom" his first name

On the right, next to "département ou région", type the number of the département where you think he lives. For instance, if it is Paris, it is 75, if it is around Nice it would be 06. If you have no idea, try all numbers from 01 to 95.

You can also try typing his name on Yahoo France or Google France and see what comes up.

Otherwise there are websites like http://copainsdavant.linternaute.com/rec...  or http://www.trombi.com/classmates_landing... where people look for their old schoolfriends, co-workers, etc.
