How can I find if a certain city is scooter/moped friendly?

WELL I never really wanted a car (its not worth the cost), but I'm gonna be needing some kind of transportation when i go to college!

So that's one thing I've been looking at when I look at colleges: could I get around this city/town easily in a scooter (or using pub transportation)?!

Most of the places I'm looking at I've never been to, so how do I find out whether I could drive a scooter/moped around the city and to the suburbs of that city?

  1. Well you can start out by asking that question on any tours you go on, or calling the office of admissions and asking (since anyone who answers phones there is probably a student there). If you're looking at going to a school inside a big, metropolitan city (I'm a student at DePaul University), then they probably have public transportation and a simple bicycle may suffice (that's what I do). But it would be quite a trek to take a scooter out to the suburbs (I don't know why I'd do that anyway). If you're looking at going to a smaller college town, they probably don't have an excellent public transit, but you could probably motor around. The only place you'd have problems is at a largely suburban campus.

Either way I'd suggest a bike over a moped or a scooter. If you really need to be traveling long distances, they're not worthwhile.
