Im trying to find out if my birth mother exists in Haiti, but I dont know the best way to do that because I currently live in the USA and I have lived here since I was 3 with no family history. I cant afford to fly there and check the hospital records, so I need the best (and most affordable way) to find out. Thanks for the help!!!!

  1. haiti is a very small country, and they may not have hospital records available without flying there so there isn't an efficiant way to find out unless you go. You could hire someone to go look for you, but that would cost more money than a plane ticket.

  2. This site has some good overall information about doing family history research in Haiti:  http://www.webster(dot).edu/~corbetre/ha...

This site contains several links to Haiti sites:  http://members.tripod.com/~davidco/#hait...

This site is an active genealogy forum specifically for Haiti, you may want to consider posting a few queries here:  http://genforum.genealogy.com/haiti/

  3. The odds are very low that you were even born in a hospital. The vast majority of the country lives in abject poverty and is surrounded by serious crime. Please don't visit and leave yourself open to kidnapping and abduction. It really is that dangerous.

The US State Department and ICE (formerly known as INS) can help you, as can the Catholic Church. Find the documents from your naturalization and adoption records that were filed with the State Dept/US Embassy in Haiti before you left and then approved and archived by the INS. They'll list all known information about your mother.

Then find a Catholic priest with ties to Haiti and ask him to make discrete inquiries for you. The clergy is the only group who can ask about individuals without putting anyone at risk.

Be so very careful. Haiti is a wicked place, especially away from the resorts. Don't let any personal information about yourself make it onto a computer screen anywhere because the scam artists will bleed you and leave you in harm's way without a second of remorse.
