  1. You need to do a ton of research, sometimes you can google names, sometimes you can make a website asking for people who have the same last name as you to write you because you might be related.  I have an aunt that researched her family tree, she researched it until she died, for 20 years.  What those sites do is give you easy access to public records. And one of those sites was the easiest way for her to get started. Maybe start at city hall?  I get the feeling you want to find out where your dad is mostly.  If he is in the usa google his name.  if you know where he might be living look at the white pages in his town.  Better yet you can do an address look-up on some of the websites for free... i don't remember which one, so many charge and i had to search forever to find one that would do it for free.  Sometimes you can put a name in and it will come up with 10 or 50 or how ever many people with his name and tell you the city or state.  Already that info narrowed it down a lot for finding him.  Then you can  go to each cities/states white pages online and put his name in, usually that will give you a phone number.  Or google his name with "  "  and but add the city as well.  Since i dont know much about your dad or how/why he left i can't help you more.  good luck.

  2. As Amber T said you need alot of research. A Tip with Google though:

When you search for an ancestor you might want to put quotation marks around it. Why? Because putting, "John Doe" instead of, John Doe. It will create an excat match to what you want to find.

is a good people finder. You can do an Advance search. Note that this is only for living people. And that they may not live at that location anymore. Zaba Search will give you their address and phone number.

  3. There are 400,000 free genealogy sites, but tracing your family tree is work. It is about as hard as writing a term paper for a high school history class. It won't tell you where your dad is, either.

Most teens decide they don't want to do it after they find out it is work. If you are still interested, and most of your ancestors were probably in the USA in the 1800's, write to me via my profile and I'll give you some links. I'll even look up a family in the 1930 census for you to get you started.

    Back to your dad -

is the site most of us recommend for finding living people in the USA. If you are in the UK or Canada, say so.
