  1. First - add your details to the registries here

    http://www.isrr.net/

    http://registry.adoption.com/

Check for information on your state records here -

    http://adopteerights.net/

(click on the page marked 'Searchers' down the left hand side)

Check here for search help - and links to search angels -

    http://www.adoptioncrossroads.org/

And check here for any support - it's the best online forum for adoptees I've found -

    http://www.adultadoptees.org/

All the very best with your search.

  2. unfortunately, no.  if you live in one of 6 certain states, you can get your original birth certificate.  without know where you were born, it's hard to answer further than that.

  3. Kimberly it depends on what state your adoption took place in.

    Check out http://www.adopteerights.net

When the page loads, click on the SEARCHERS link at the top of the page, and it will have information on your state there.

And be sure to register at Soundex too!

  4. Depends on the state.  Other options are to register with the ISRR and state registries.

  5. I am a reunited adoptee. There is a great website you can go to for support in searching. It is free and it's called www.forums.adoption.com you can register your information there under the reunion registry.

You have to petition the court to give you adoption papers and even then it is not guaranteed. There are only 5 states that you are guaranteed to get your paperwork.

Alabama, Alaska, Kansas, New Hampshire, and Oregon are "open records states," meaning that adult adoptees can receive copies of original documentation about their adoptions just by completing an application process. Other states also provide for the release of original information with some restrictions.

Also, go to http://www.isrr.net/ and register for free with them. You never know if you have siblings or birth parents looking for you as well. =)  Hope this helps!
