I'm at my parents house and I need to connect my laptop to their wireless network but it wants the key. Is there a way to find it by looking at their internet connections on their pc?

  1. I'm not sure if there is a way of finding a network key.  There are ways to hack to find the network key, but the simplest thing is to log into the wireless router.

Step 1: Windows + R, and type in CMD <enter>

Step 2: Type in ipconfig <enter>

Step 3: Look at the gateway ip address and type that into your browser i.e. http://192.168.0.1

Step 4: Type in the password if you don't know try just admin with no password, or admin password.  If not read the manual

Step 5:  Go to the wireless security in the router and see if you can get the network key.

Otherwise you'll have to set a new network key.  I know that sucks, you'll have to change that across all machines.  But it's good to rotate your network key :)

Here are some sites about hacking a wireless network, use only on yourself when you have lost your key!

  2. No, it will not list it on any of the computers it will just have dots.

First locate the manual for your router. Look for the address to type into Internet explorer to access it. It will probably be //192.168.0.1 or //192.168.1.1 Then enter the username and password, again, its best to have the manual for what these default to. Once you are logged in look through the tabs for a screen to find wep(or wpa etc) key information.

  3. go to a computer that is currently on the network and look for the router software and choose to add a new computer to the network..if should prompt you with a key or even the auto software to pop on a floppy or usb to just plug-in and place into the network.

  4. Hi there,

The key could be listed in the router settings. To access the router configuration, go to the start menu, click on run, type in 'cmd' (without quotation marks) and press enter. In the command prompt that comes up, type in 'ipconfig' (without quotes) and press enter. From the results that display, type in the value for 'Default Gateway' (usually 192.168.0.1) into your browser address bar and press enter. In the window that comes up, the username is usually admin and the password, password , however if this isn't the case, it might state what they are on the router itself or in any router documentation you may have. Once in the router configuration, navigation to your wireless settings or 'WLAN' and it may be listed there in plain text.

Hope this helps and hope it's there, if you have any problems, please let me know.

    Have a great day,

    Matthew.
