How can I find out about the marital status of an American citizen? Is there any website where I can get that?

There's no central data base.  However, there are many companies on the Internet that, for less than $100, will give you a pretty good background investigation of the person you're interested in.

You would have to look for the records in the county in which they were married.  That is where you will find the marriage license.  If they were later divorced you would have to look in that county to find the decree of divorce.  That is the only place you will be able to find the information you are looking for.
