How can I find out how many businesses are in an industry?

I have to find out how many businesses total are in an industry within a ceratin geographical location for a school paper. What site could tell me this?

I havent heard of any site that could give you that. Only thing is the State Dept of Business might have it. Not sure if its publicly available though.
