I don't know if I have one or not and apparently it's essential. So, if someone could please help me figure this out, I'd really appreciate it! Also, if I find out that I don't have one, what do you recommend??

  1. You're right, a firewall is pretty important these days. And not just any, but a good one.

Click on Control Panel>Security>Security Center, and you'll be shown all the security software you have on your computer. If you're using Windows, then you should already have the free Windows firewall. But since the Windows firewall sucks, well, here's a few free alternatives that don't. =P

Comodo offers a pretty good firewall. Tough, halfway easy to use, yada yada. Online Armor is another good choice. And lastly, ZoneAlarm offers a free firewall as well, but it isn't nearly as good as the first two. Though it may be slightly simpler to use.

Any of these can be found via http://www.download.com .

Of course, if you wanted to shell out some $$, you could always get a top-notch 'wall, like that of Kaspersky Internet Security or Outpost Pro. But hey, free isn't always a bad thing, and in this case, it's actually pretty good.

And if you want to do a little reading of your own.. http://www.matousec.com/projects/firewal...

  2. try control panel > security centre and you should be able to see if you have one in there.

If you have a router it has it's own firewall
