price is a good indicator.  if its cheap, it is likely sweatshop or 3rd world.   country of mfg. is another.

If you're buying from a supplier in order to re-sell the items you can ask them what kind of assurance they can give.  

You may also be interested in 'NAFTA Friendly' manufacturers.
