How can I find out if my popcorn ceiling contains asbestos?

House was built in the 50's. I've always been scared to clean my ceiling thoroughly in fear that asbestos will enter my lungs and kill me.

popcorn ceilings were not done it the 50's (originated in the late 1970's)so its a very good chance they're not original but i still wear a dust mask when cleaning them if your too worried get one with a respirator
