  1. The value is the cost to replace with a like carpet less the depreciated value.

Let's say the cost to replace the carpet is $1000.00.

The old carpet had a life expectancy of 10 years, but is only 5 years old. The depreciated value is 5/10 of the cost - $500.00.

If the carpet was 6 years old, the depreciated value would be 4/10 -$400.00

If the carpet were 7 years old, the depreciated value would be 3/10 -$300.00

  2. There is no value in used carpet. Its junk. The only carpet that is worth money is new carpet. If someone ruined your carpet, the normal procedure would be to charge them to replace it (with new carpet).
