How can I find out what shots are needed to visit North Vietnam without paying a hefty fee?

No shots needed. I was just there and there nothing to worry about!! If you go to Hanoi don't forget to try the dog and the snake........Yummy!!!!!

There is no malaria in Hanoi, but you go outside the city and you can get it.  (NOTE: I've had it, believe me you don't want it...you wouldn't even wish it on your worst enemy)

Once you get here, check with the Hanoi Family Clinic if you're worried. Rates are reasonable and the doctors are all expats...(US, Engish, Australian, Israelis).

They literally saved my life on quite a few occasions during the last 16 years.

You don't need any shots at all to get through the border.  It would probably be a good Idea to have tetanus, but again, not necessary.
