How can I find out what the weather was in a certain area 30 years ago?

I'm trying to find out about a bad storm in Texas in 1978. So I'm looking for temperature data for that year and for annecdotal writings but I'm not having any luck.

Put in the city, county or zip code for the area you are researching then scroll to the about the middle of the page (Histroy and Almanac section) and you can select the year, month and day that you are wanting to retrieve data for.  It should go back to at least 1970.  If the storm produced tornadoes, they have a section on their main menu where you can research history of tornadoes for a specified area as well.
