Question:

How can I fix leaning brick retaining wall?

I have a brick retaining wall near my front porch and it is noticeably leaning by the driveway. There's no flowers but it is filled with dirt and weeds. I have a downspout that drains the water down some type of piping in the wall. Do I need to take all the dirt out BEFORE I fix it or get it fixed? Is it better to get a professional?

  1. Sounds to me whoever put up the wall did not do a very good job.

I would say it has to come down and be rebuilt.

    Call a professional

  2. You will have to remove at a minimum enough dirt to give you a 2-3 foot working space, plus enough to slope the dirt side at a 45 from your working area to grade. You don't say how high your wall is, so can't say what that amount of dirt may be. I would probably take the dirt out, knock the wall down and start all over. Make sure you have a good solid foundation for the wall, and make sure you address drainage of the downspout and the area in general. Water can be a  pretty heavy load on these walls.

  3. Very little information here. So with this limited information.  Not all of the dirt,  just enough so that the wall can be fixed or repaired or anything else that might need to be done. If you hire someone to do this work for you, let them do it.
