Question:

How can I fix my bike pedal?

Yesterday, I almost hit a car while biking with my friend. I was just leaving my house and pulled off the sidewalk with my friend behind me. There were no cars or anything in front of me so I just turned my head around to see how my friend was doing and then a car pulled out in front of me. I slammed on the brakes, never actually hitting the car, but I was thrown off the bike onto the car. After that, the left-leg pedal hasn't been working. It has been colliding with the bike. I don't understand why because the bike never hit anything, just fell to the ground. How do I fix this pedal? Here are photos

  1. I can only think of three ways the crank arm would hit the chain stay.

    1. The crank arm is bent. If aluminum gets bent, bending it back will severely weaken it. Solution: get a new crank arm.

    2. The crank arm is loose on the bottom bracket. When this happens, the square-tapered hole gets rounded and will no longer stay tight. Solution: get a new crank arm.

    3. Frame is bent. You can eyeball the frame to tell if it's crooked. Or ride through a puddle and see if both wheels track in the same line. Solution: get a new bike.

  2. youve got a bent crank you need to remove it get a flat surface and hit it with a rubber mallet (aluminium dints easy)

or replace it .if it bent easily to begin with it is prob a cheapy

  3. The crank arm is hitting the chainstay. See the raw metal? If it hasn't been knocked loose at the bottom bracket but actually bent, it's time for a new crank...it can't be repaired.

I don't know about you, but after a spill like this I can't remember exactly what happened, least of all what my pedal did.

  4. Your crank or frame is fubared.

Your crank cannot be repaired.  If your frame is steel, it can be straightened, but aluminum cannot maintain it's structural integrity once it has been bent and re-bent.

Flip your bike upside down and slowly pedal the cranks.  It should be obvious if the one is not straight.
