Question:

How can I fix my camera after getting sand in it?

I might've kind of got sand on my camera when I was at the beach the other day. When I turn it on it makes a crunchy sound from the sand and it doesn't open all the way. The screen says "lens error". I looked this up and I know I shouldn't keep turning it on and off so I took the battery out. However, this is the 2nd time (I'm pretty clumsy) something has happened to this camera and I only got it back in March. So I don't wanna tell my dad about b/c I'm sure he'll get really mad. Every website is saying I have to get it professionally fixed, but I heard it's pretty expensive and b/c of it being new I don't wanna have to buy a new one.. and I really like this one. Will I HAVE to get it proffesionally done?

  1. Drop it in a container of water and wait about 10 minutes. Should be good as new when done.

  2. First, ignore Ares.

Second, its likely that your camera is ruined. If it can be repaired it will probably cost as much as a new camera.

Camera repair is NOT a "do it yourself" project. In the Owner's Manual you'll see a warning to not try taking the camera apart.

Save your money and buy an Olympus Stylus 850SW. Its waterproof to 10' and shockproof to a 5' drop.

  3. my best suggestion is to eathier take apart the camera and try to get out as much sand as possible or take it to camera shop to get it fixed. hope this helps.

  4. If every website says that the camera needs to be sent in for repairs (professionally fixed) hint, hint, hint that means that send in the camera because attempting to fix your own camera is not a do it yourself. there's more too fixing the camera than one may think and would cause more damage than attempting to fix the original problem.

consider this that the cost to have the camera repaired would most likely be equal or greater than what the camera is really worth so it's probably time to start looking of a new camera instead of having the camera repaired.

  5. If this is the second time, then perhaps you should've been more careful, eh? Cameras are pretty delicate things.

To answer your question... You can fix it by handing it over to your local camera store, or shipping it back to the original company for repairs. This won't be covered under your warranty as it is user-inflicted, so you'll probably have to pay for all the repairs.
