How can I fix the string on my vertical blinds? The cat bit thru it and I don't want to restring it.?

I have vertical blinds on the windows (the kind that you pull on one string loop and they all come to the left side; if you pull the other end, it closes them all again...runs on a track). Well, the cat chewed through the string and now it won't work. A knot is too big to go through the gears, and re-stringing it is really complicated. Any suggestions for something to bind it together with that is small enough to run through the gears? And flexible?
