How can I fix this hole in my ceiling?

Question

Water damage has built up over time and caused this hole, about 2"x3", to drop out of the ceiling. Is there any way I can fix this?

Fix the water leek

The wood around has rotted, change that

then some sheetrock.

Yes you can fix it.  First you have to fix the leak or there isn't any point of fixing it.  Next you will need to make the hole a bit bigger because you need to make it square and get it so your patch can reach the wooden joices so you can s***w the new jiprock into the  wood and it is supported.  Then tape and plaster the joints.  Sand when dry to make it smooth and paint.

i always use plaster, but its always for small holes so i don't know if it will work.

Fix the water leak or leaky roof first, or it will happen again.

Assuming that this is a drywall ceiling:

cut the damaged part out back to the wood framing.  Cut the drywall so that it exposes half of the ceiling joist or rafter above it.

Remove any drywall screws or nails you expose when cutting out the damaged portion.  Fasten the existing drywall to the rafter if necessary with new drywall screws or nails.

Get a new sheet of drywall the same thickness as the old.  Cut it to fit the opening, and nail/s***w it into place.

Put drywall seam tape and drywall compound over the joints and the s***w / nail heads in the middle of the patch, if needed, and let dry thoroughly.  

Add more drywall compound if necessary to build up a smooth surface over the joints and nail heads.  Sand as needed.

Prime or add a topcoat or texture to the new area to match the old.  Repaint the entire ceiling.

plaster is the key! temporary of course. it will be safe until u find somone to fix it properly. i would be more worried about the leakage then the hole : /
