Question:

How can I gain more driving distance?

This is probably the most typical question seen in golf. Please, do not tell me to work on my short game because to be honest, I have a very good one (I'm a 4 handicapper). Well, Im 16, about 5'10-5'11 and drive the ball approx. 250 yards with a Titleist 905r w/ Proforce stiff flex. Basically I am searching for exercises/workouts that target golf muscles and that will help me hit the ball farther? I feel as though this is holding me back as it is rather hard to compete hitting 4 irons while someone else is hitting a 6 iron (I'm searching for more birdies, already found the pars). In reference to the question, I was thinking pushups and core exercises (crunches/sit ups) but I'm open to any and all suggestions.

  1. Get a faster car then you can dive as far as the gas tank can drain

  2. Alright man, here you go...

Im a +0.7 index for a major D1 school, and Im going to tell you that distance DOES matter in alot of hard courses.  People will say drive for show,putt........ not always true when you are trying to putt for par from 10 feet because you had to hit driver, 3iron, and 40 yard pitch to get to a par 4.  SOOO, ya you need to gain some distance in order to get better honestly, especially on the courses I know you are playing.  As far as excersises go, try to do reverse curls with lighter weight and lots of reps, also do wrist curls, and attach a weight to a pipe and do wrist rolls for awhile.  If you build up your wrists and forearms, this will give you about another 10-15yards.  As for the others, ya sit ups work really well.  Also, work on explosive excersises as well with light weight, like cleans and stuff like that.  This will help your strength at impact.  Finally, try to do more lat pulldowns and squats, as this will help your technique and swing speed.  You can seriously gain probably 30 yards just from doing some of these excercises for awhile.

Also, as far as technique goes, try to get as much width at the top of your backswing as possible.  It's physics, the more width you have in your angle, the quicker the swing speed.  Try some of these, Im being serious they will help.  Got me to where I am.

6' 180lbs, average about 295y off the tee.

  3. yeah dude 250 is wat i hit and i'm 5 ft 6.  thats a good distance for someone my height. but i get it from shoulder rotation and keeping a strong core. make sure your completely relaxed and very balanced.  keep your lower body stable too stay as consistent as possible throughout the swing. also once you start really get your confindence goin, you can take the chance and try swinging harder.

  4. If you're driving the ball 250 and keeping it in the fairway you're hitting better than 99% of golfers today.  You claim to have a very good short game.   If it's as good as you claim, then you should be getting birdies.  A 4 handicap should be scoring plenty of birdies so I have to doubt the honesty of your question.
