  1. Wireless routers are safe as long as you have a password set on it and a decent firewall on both computers.

  2. Get a powerline HD-PLC networking kit. I think the speed is a little slower than wireless, but still many times faster than your Internet connection, plus it's extremely easy to set up.

  3. You can have a wired router, however you would need one long cable and be able to run it through the vents. My friends done this before and they had to hire professional installer so they could run it through the vent systems.

  4. well you could just buy a wireless router and use the wired part of it with a 100ft ether net cord but a seperate router could cost 100$ and over even for the cheapest ones a wired/wireless connection is your most cost effective choice. Along with that it means that comcast will charg you for 2 internet services not just one. sot eh Box could come free or cost 100$ or more and you have to add an internet service for about the same amoun t you pay now so it would be 100$ if you have to buy and moniter plus the amount of money for the second line. Tell your mom she might have to spend over 150$ for the net connection or she can spend around 70$ for a wireless connection...her choice.

  5. You can call comcast and get another cable modem for the upstairs too.  It will cost the same as the one downstairs costs.

Your mother is not well informed about the safety of wireless.

I would suggest you educate your mother on wireless.   She isn't afraid of a cordless phone is she?  Wireless networks use the same band range as most of the newer cordless phones.

    If you can convince her:

Get a wireless router and a wireless network adapter for the computer upstairs.  Install per the directions that come with the devices.   Cost $200 once.  Alternative cost $30-$60 per month ongoing.
