Ok, so about 7 years ago I started my local community college in hopes of becoming an ultrasound technician. The clinical program has been full for a couple of years now, so I decided I would try for the Respiratory Therapy program and failed it. In the process of failing it, I failed 3 Respiratory related classes, a algebra class and human physiology. That was a huge blow to my academic confidence and decided I would just finish out with my degree in applied science and be happy with that since I love my job now but don't want all my credits/time/money to be a waste. Here is the problem. My college has said I am "lazy", and that I havn't tried hard enough to pass the classes I failed. I tried VERY hard to pass them and found out along the way that I am not very good at science (I have very little science experience from HS) and that the applied science is a better route. Well, because I didn't "try hard enough" and I'm "lazy" (even though I took every test, studied all the time, went

  1. Most schools have an appeals process the student can go through when their fin aid has been suspended after not making Satisfactory Academic Progress while on probation.  Find out what to do (the process is usually in your schools catalog or the fin aid office can give you a handout).

Also, "trying" doesn't cut it in college.  Don't include this tidbit and info in your appeal.... they want to hear how unusual and extenuating circumstances effected your normal "smart" intellectual ability was impeded and how you now have gotten over it and can pass and succeed.

  2. Maybe you should try another field.  If you are not good at science, you can do something else.   Just because medical jobs pay well and hire often does not mean it is for you.  If you try really hard and fail still, it may be that it just is not meant to be.  Not everyone is good at everything.

The college does not want to use resources that can be used for people that are making progress there.  If you work a part time job, you can probably pay it yourself, and do well in something else so they will take you off probation.

Also, look at $300 a month if you are out of school... it is not much less than the 400 a month it will cost you to pay $5k a year out of pocket.  So do that.  stay in school, work your butt off for a year and pay for school while keeping your deferment.
