  1. They are doing away with TINs for this purpose.

You need a job for SS.

  2. You have already asked this question within the past 1/2 hour.  As I said, go to the social security office.

  3. You cant get a SSN# unless your trying to get a job with The Department of Homeland Security. You can still get a tax ID# which will allow to work and pay taxes.

  4. Hello,

I can answer this question pretty well as I have been through this.

In the US, it is nearly impossible for a foreigner to obtain a SSN number. Even investors (under E-1 or E-2 visa) who invest a substantial amount of money in the US economy have a hard time to obtain it.

Here is what you have to do as soon as possible:

Normally, as a student (under F-1 visa), you are allowed to work on campus for a maximum of 20 hours/week. For you to get the SSN, find a student job which are pretty easy to get, then you can apply for the SSN. There is no limited amount of time regarding your student job so you can basically work one hour and apply for SSN.

I suggest that you do that as soon as possible as there is no guarantee to you will have the opportunity to do it later (for example, if you do not find a company that will sponsor you for H1-B).
