  1. If you are looking for that kind of yield, you need to go longer term and higher risk then you may be comfortable with.

    Consider  "junk bonds" or secondary mortgages.

Answer will depend upon your risk tolerance.  If you do not need the money for a few years you can place it into the stock market.  Safest option there would be an index fund or exchange traded fund(etf).  note if you go that route shop around and keep an eye on management fees.  Next route would be bonds corprate not government with the exception of municipals which have some nice tax advantages.  You also have options for peer to peer lending at sites such as http://www.prosper.com/referrals/all.asp...

  3. You're probably best off investing in diversified stocks and mutual funds, which average 7% adjusted for inflation over any 10 year period.  Remember inflation is around 4%.
