  1. It looks to me like they are not for sale yet. The source says, "Plans are proceeding for the marketing of this system with local companies in the United States". In other words they are still planning to sell them and not already selling them.

  2. You cannot get them yet, they are not for sale.  I am not sure they will ever be for sale, and this is why:

If you calculate the energy use of the typical drive in your car to go back and forth to work, and to the store on weekends, you will find that it uses a similar amount of energy that your house uses in the same week.  Not exactly, but similar.  Now calculate how much your gasoline bill is for your car everyweek and then figure out the difference between the gasoline bill and the home electric bill.  This is the difference in the efficiency of the two methods of providing power.

Put another way, if you could double your gas bill, but eliminate your electric bill, and at the same time eliminate the cost of gasoline for your car, would it save you money?  Most people will say yes.  While using a home power station will not "take you off the grid," it will make you independent of the local electric company.  Imagine the potential lost income of the typical powerhouse that is your local electric company!

It is quite likely that at the very least, the local electric companies will band together to pass legislation that will require the home power station to meet very strict safety guidelines, that can only be accomodated by a vast increase in the cost of the unit.  I look for them to be in the $50,000 range or more when they finally come out.

While I certainly advocate safety, just look at the typical automobile.  You can make a car safe without an airbag, but airbags are required, and usually add 10% to the cost of the typical automobile.  It is not a matter of making a safer car, but simply a matter of meeting a standard that really has nothing to do with safety.

I look for the home power station to require all sorts of added components that may or may not add to it's safety, but they will be required by law to be a part of the unit before it is sold.

I sure hope I am wrong, because I want to be one of the first to tell IPL and the gasoline stations that I do not need them anymore.
