  1. Pack up and go horse hunting... If it is too difficult, then find the easy way: marry a horse owner!!

  2. Check "Craig's List". I've seen I guy wanting to get rid of 3 of them. They are probably dog food by now ,tho.

  3. You can probably get a horse for free.  It is the board, vet bills, food, farrier etc that are the real expenses.  I am sure that there are plenty of school horses that don't work out and are costing more money than they are making.  They might be perfectly good horses but maybe they are too advanced for the riding school's clientele or vice-versa.  A riding school might be happy for you to take over the expenses since the horse isn't earning it's keep.  Also, I believe that retired racehorses sometimes can't find homes (some of my favorite horses - they can be used for jumping, dressage or pleasure horses, depending on their termperments and abilities. Also post an add or myspace and Craigslist.  It's possible someone owns a horse they love very much but can't afford to keep it anymore and is looking for a good home for it.  I knew one person who had a wonderful show horse.  But, when he got divorced he couldn't afford to keep it anymore.  You can't just abandon a horse. He was lucky the barn where he boarded it kept it as a lesson horse.

But, remember getting the horse is the cheap part. It is maintaining it that is expensive.  You need to be sure that you have enough money to maintain it properly and that it is the right horse for you.  It's a lot or responsibility and if yu decide you don't want to spend so much money on it anymore, what are you going to do?  The horse's well-being needs to be your first priority.

  4. Free horses usually have costly problems that is really the only reason why someone would be willing to give away a horse for free.  You might check out the association that deals in wild horses and check into adopting a wild horse.  Even if you do find a sound horse for free it takes money to take care of it.  You will have vet bills, feed bills, board bills (if you don't have a place to keep it), farriar bills, etc.  In short horses aren't cheap.

  5. There's no such thing as a free horse. The purchase price of a horse is the cheapest part of owning one. If you can't afford to buy a horse, you can't afford to care for one properly. "Free" horses often come with problems as well, since there's usually a reason they're being given away. So in the long run, it may be more expensive to get a free horse than to spend $1,000 on a decent, sound, trained horse.

  6. I GOT MY FREE HORSE FROM CRAIG'S LIST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. just go buy 1. why would u need 1 for free

  8. There are horse rescues which have horses for reasonable adoption fees of sometimes as low as a few hundred dollars. Go to www.petfinder.org and search for horses in your area and most will be listed by rescues. There is a program to adopt wild mustangs as well but this is also not free (there are fees). There are probably free horses available from time to time but my guess is that a free horse would likely be one that is not sound enough to ride or that has severe behavioral or costly health problems. Otherwise, if the horse were in great shape, healthy and ride-able, the owners would probably try to sell and get some money. Even if you find a free horse you will have to pay to trailer him to your stable. And then there is the feed, vet, farrier, tack, etc, that will be an ongoing expense.
