I want to write to a Japanese person (my own age). Is there some on-line place that will help you connect with a pen-pal in Japan, that is also English? Oh yeah, I want to have a pen-pal by snail mail preferably.

Try looking on websites like interpals.net. They have people from around the world (including many from Japan). On the person's profile, it should say whether they're interested in snail mail or strictly emailing. Most of them are learning English, so their grammar isn't always that good, but talking to you should help that :)
