How can I get a Landlord to write down an Occupany agreement?

He keeps telling me to have people to call him and he will let them know about the apartment. I gave him $200 to take the apt of the market and now I need something in writing to provide for school for the kids and my husband's work.

  1. Check the renters rights in your area. If you gave him cash the it's probably your word against his. Goto a property management company and milk them for information. ask questions odds are they will give information for free. If he's legit there should have been a rental agreement or a lease with terms and conditions.


  2. This doesn't sound good at all.  Hope the deposit was by check or you got a receipt.  I'd never leave a deposit without a signed rental agreement.

    This may even violate your state law.  Suggest calling the attorney general if you can't find a more local agency.  You can look up your state law at its website.  If you find the clause that says it must be written, print it out for him.  Otherwise, tell him you need either a written agreement or your deposit returned IMMEDIATELY.
