How can I get a .edu email address?

I'm open to all sorts of options. Ideally I would like to get my hands on a .edu domain by auction, or something. I'm aware of the restrictions in place to keep individuals from registering a .edu, but some sites have been grandfathered in from before these limitations were put in place. Another idea I've considered is, maybe some .edu site out there offers free email addresses, or a subdomain. Let me know what you come up with.

  1. If you are a graduate of a post-secondary educational institution, you might be offered an e-mail account ending in .edu as an alumni member.  You might have to apply for it or have to apply to have it activated.

I am not sure if I totally understand your question.  I cannot think of any restrictions that would apply to a .edu e-mail account apart from the stipulation that users operate within the confines of the law and not use it to harrass others.  If you are trying to use it as your own business e-mail account, you would maybe have to inquire about any possible restrictions in this regard with the office that issues it.

  2. The only way (and it is the only way other than enrolling in, or otherwise becoming affiliated with, a school that has one) is to be a recognized educational institution.  An individual can't bid on an .edu domain.
