I'm only 16, but I'm pretty sure this is the field I'd like to get into. Can anyone point me in the right direction? What are some things I can do to get ahead?

  1. United States Air Force.

  2. It's not a good time to be an A-P in the America all the major airlines are laying off!! bad things they are sending most of the work to 3rd party vendors such as China, Mexico , and even to ElSalavdor! If you want to work for a major get ready to work the night shift because that is when the plane is on the ground .also you get to work all the holidays and you don;t get summer vactions sorry to sound so grim but it is the truth

  3. Start by reading and learning how systems work on an aircraft such as hydraulics and electrical systems.  It would be best to concentrate on a specific area such as power plants or airframes.  I personally joined The Navy and went through some of their technical schools, that may also be a direction you might take.  I wish you good luck!

  4. Most community colleges offer an FAA approved A&P school. Its a pretty long, intense courses (about 3-4 years) but you'll never be out of a job once you finish. Unlike pilots who spend an average of 35% of their time out of work, certified mechanics are always in demand.

There are also some interesting specialities you may want to consider. The avionics tech guys are even more in demand than mechanics. These guys fix radios and don't even get dirty. ;) Other mechanics work for engine repair shops and just overhaul engines all day.
