How can I get a schengen when I'm currently in Poland with my polish visa about to expire?

I'm currently a 4th year medical student in Poland and I have a 1-year polish non-schengen visa ending on January 3rd 2008. I will complete my studies and get my degree on March 15th 2008. But I must leave the country on January 3rd. And since the Schengen has expanded I can't just go to Germany and get the free '90 day tourism' stamp. What are my options? Can I go to the UK and come right back? Do I need to go to the US and wait 180 days? I have not traveled to Germany in over 8 months so i'm not sure the 180 day rule applies to me. Maybe I should just keep a low profile for 2 more and take my chances. Also, i am an american citizen. I appreciate any insight.

Apply for a Schengen visa in any embassy of any country in Poland since your Polish visa is about to expire.

what are you saying? if your studies are not finished and you will graduate march 15th 2008? you should see your school counselor for an extention? it should be allowed,

On 21 December 2007 passport checks were abolished on Poland’s border to Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Lithuania by a decision of the European Parliament – all this on account of an extension of the Schengen area to admit nine new states, including Poland.

Poland is scheduled to join the Schengen zone on Jan. 1, 2008. Thirteen EU countries plus Iceland and Norway participate in the scheme, and Switzerland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, the Czech Republic and Poland will enter the system soon.

Germany is the one closet and you do not need a visa a an US citizen,in any other country in the schengen zone
