Question:

How can I get a vasectomy?

Ok I do not have any kids of my own and I do not have medical insurance. I have heard that they don't really give men vasectomies unless they have already had a child. I do not want children of my own for my own personal reasons. Is there any way to get them to let me get one and since I don't have medical insurance, do clinics do things like that for people that don't have that insurance or do they only help when a surgery is absolutely necessary for a person's health?

Also, about how much is it? I'm not working right now, but if I knew of a cheap way to get one, with or without insurance, that would be great. Thanks a lot!

  1. A doctor can't really refuse to have a vasectomy done, even if you haven't had kids yet. They'll probably make sure you know that a vasectomy is pretty permanent, but they can't refuse.

  2. I used to work with a urologist who specialized in men's health,(which is what you need to see) I *believe* the cost for those who pay cash is around $700. That included the pre-test (just a blood test for platelet count) and follow-up care and exam. That was about three years ago, and is quite low-cost for what is technically a surgery (but it only takes about six minutes to perform, with just a shot of Novocaine. It's really quite easy.)

Perhaps if you don't have cash on hand you can save it over a few months, making pre-payments, or maybe someplace like Planned Parenthood can direct you to a physician who has a 'sliding scale' fee system-there are still some in existence, but you'd need to go through an agency such as P.P.  It's worth a try. If you know you don't want children, just be clear on that with whomever you speak to, and *good job* for preventing what you know you don't want.

  3. Clearly you have it all wrong.  Flush everything that anyone told you about vasectomies in the past, and start learning again right now.

You only have to be 18.  That is the law in all 50 states.  You don't have to have children.  I had a vasectomy when I was 21.  I never had children.  My buddy did the same when he was 24.  He has never even been married.

The cost for his, last year, was $600 at a non-profit clinic.  I think the cost, if you are paying cash, at a regular doctor is less than $1000.

You are what is called "Child-Free".  There is nothing strange about it.  It is pretty common these days.
