I am starting to teach a 9 year old swimming lessons. She is taller for her age and is very uncomfortable in water. What can I do to calm her nerves?

  1. go in the water with her

  2. Be patient and work slowly toward your goal.

Hold on to her tightly while she is in the water, and if she wants to get out, let her.

Play fun games with her in the water, and work on things like blowing bubbles and getting toys. If she is too uncomfortable even for this, then I would either talk to the parents or go even slower than that.

Have her kick with kickboards and noodles, and support her the entire time. Reassure her that you will not let ANYTHING happen to her.

Once she is happy in the water, then I would start the actual lessons.

    Good luck!
