How can I get an apartment with Poor credit?

I want to get my own place. Only problem is I have terrible credit. My score is like 474. Can I rent an apartment with poor credit or should I wait and fix my credit a little? By the way I need to move out by at least christmas because right now Im living with my father who has decided to stop paying the mortgage on his house due to depression and alcoholism. I have no problem paying rent especially on time. I live in chicago if anyone knows of any places or listings please let me know.

I'm sorry, but your credit score is horrible. You will see some improvement if you work on your credit, but probably not much by Christmas.

The only way for you to get a rental would be with a co-signer and a large security deposit or to find a landlord that will accept your situation.

It is going to be tough though. Even most small time independent landlords run credit checks nowadays.

You can still get a place if you can prove that you make about three times the rent. Otherwise, I suggest looking for independent land lords or just regular people renting out their houses or apartments. Those kind of places usually aren't going to check your credit.
