By stereotypical I mean using words that are commonly related to Australia, but they're not used that much.

  1. Sorry you can never fake and Aussie accent its the hardest to aquire. (The proccess starts at birth)

  2. a person picks up their accent mostly between ages 8 and 13.

there arent really that many things that typical aussies say that are completely stereotypical. i can think of people often talking about "cold ones (beers)", bbqs are called barbies, sausages are mostly snags, a girl is a sheila, a lot of people have utes... good luck

lol yeah i say mate and gday as well, but i do say sheila. as in " blimey check that sheila!"

  3. I know what you mean. Australia is made of different cultures and so many different people live here that have come from other countries so really your own accent is Australian aswell as the way that we all talk but if you live in Australia you will be mainly surrounded by people with Australian accents and when you are around them your voice will start to sound a little more like theirs.

  4. You have to live in the country for a while before you can even begin to acquire an accent.  Very few overseas born people I have met have eliminated their original accent completely.  Your accent is your accent and don't feel self conscious about it.

  5. I've never known anyone to acquire a genuine Aussie accent if they came here after about the age of 10. It seems to be a particularly difficult accent to 'do' if you weren't raised here. Ours has far flatter vowels than any other accent and that's what imitators always have trouble with, so perhaps if you concentrate on that aspect you may get somewhere.

Like Elizabeth, I call people mate and say g'day and I also use chook (what you'd call a chicken) and (shudder) fair dinkum, but would never say crikey or bonza or sheila. Your best bet is to pick up your Australianisms from ridgy didge (there's another one) Aussies, not the ones you see on television or in movies.

  6. you cannot --get an Aussie accent -- you either have one(born here) or you don't(not born here)& never will have one that a Aussie will not pick as a fake accent. But you may fool people from other countrys

  7. Sorry, I really have no idea.

I grew up with my Aussie accent.

I do understand what you mean though, I have never or rarely used the words bonza, crikey etc.

I do call people mate and say G'day regularly.
