How can I get audio from my digital video camera to show up on my computer?

  1. The same way you get video...

    If you are using a miniDV based camcorder and transferring using USB, that will not work. You need to use the DV port, a firewire (IEEE1394 and i.Link are all the same thing) cable and connect to the firewire port on your computer. Installin one is easy if you have an available PCI slot (desktop) or PCMCIA port (laptop).

    USB will not work.

    Once you get the video and audio in, you can extract just the audio - if that is what you want to do - using the video editor. Then you can make that audio MP3 with tools like Audacity.

Your camcorder needs a firewire connection (ieee 1394) in order to download video, your PC probably did not come with a firewire port, so you will have to buy one and install it, since most computers (except possibly brand new) don't come with a firewire port, your camcorder did not come with a firewire cord so you have to purchase a cord too. Your camcorder did come with a USB cord and that is used for downloading stills from your camcorder.
