Question:

How can I get back into my "running" shape again?

I used to run a lot in high school. Now I'm considering walking onto a small college track team. My times in high school were good enough but it's been a year since I've really trained. However, I do work out (abs, some cardio, and weight lift) very often... about 4 - 5 days a week for 2 hours.

What can I do (without over training) to get myself back into great shape?

  1. swim for a couple of km

  2. Run, run, run, and then run some more.

  3. run ur *** off

  4. Start back slowly with the running, do not try and push yourself too much at the beginning - start with 2-4 mile runs 3-4 times a week.  Slowly push youself up to 30+ miles a week.  do not do more that 10% more than the previos week.  So if you start with 15 miles only add 1-2 extra the next week.  Every four weeks take a "break" drop back 20-30% and then restart where you left off the previous week.  Once you get to 30 miles per week, this should take about 10-15 weeks start with small sprints 12x15s with a 90s jog between - build up from there.  Look at the calendar and pick a couple of races - this will be your motivator.

    This should help.

  5. start running again

  6. I am in the exact same situation as you. I graduated from high school last year and took a year off and now i am contaminating walking onto my colleges track team. I too have been working out during the year but not really running and I was definitely not in the same shape as I was last year. What I am doing is I am pledging to myself that I will run a marathon over the summer. So  I have slowly started to get back into shape by working my millage to the point where I feel that I am back in the shape that I used to be. So the marathon something to look forward to and gives me more of an incentive to get out there and run. Good luck hope you get back in shape and make the team.
