How can I get better at running a mile?

I'm a 14 year old girl and I just started running today, and I got 11:52 for a mile, which is worse than I did in 5th grade =\. Soccer starts August 21st, so I want to be a good runner so I do better in tryouts. How often and how far should I run to get my time down? And how fast do you think I could do a mile by soccer?

  1. Do sprints one day, like 3 miles another day, and a 1 mile run one day. That should help you.

  2. Interval Training

  3. Hi, I'm a cross country runner and I used to play soccer, so I know how hard training is a and how lazy some can be to get into shape (like me!), but the best idea is to run. Really log in miles- not too many a week but try to shorten your mile time... by a lot. To be in average shape for a soccer player you should try to get in the 7-9 minute range. It may seem like a far jump, but if you train by running a mile a day or a mile every other day (or something to that effect) you'll see a huge time difference (for good!). One of my really good friends is a HARD core soccer player (Varsity as a freshman, year round type thing) and if my mile is a 6:50, she's probably a a7:10-30. You need to be really confident in yourself though. A good goal is to be in the 9's when your tryouts start, and as you get in better shape so will you time. But most importantly do not force yourself. If you hurt- STOP. But you need to try your hardest. I hope this helps. Don't forget the water!

Good luck in tryouts- you should do fine

  4. For training run up really long hills. Like if there is a street near you that goes up hill, run along it. Or at the gym set the treadmills to an angle. It helps for cardio and power
