Question:

How can I get caught up 3 grade years?

I have failed 3 times, I should be in the 10th grade but I'm in the 7th. I want to get back on track and be in the 10th grade - the coming school year. I'm not in school and haven't been for one year.

Where do I start? What do I have to do? Is it possible?

Before anyone starts bashing me here's what happened.

-I was home schooled before with a teacher who didn't teach me well. Thats one year I failed.

-I skipped a lot and got expelled for skipping so many days. That's year two I failed.

-Once I was expelled I didn't go back to school - my mom said she would enroll me into some kind of schooling I could do at home on my own, she's been slacking so I basically took a whole year off of school. That would be the third year I failed.

I do not want homeschooling where someone has to teach me - I had bad experience with it. (see second sentence)

I do not have a learning disability, I was a straight A student up until 5th grade, my grade started slipping as I started skipping

  1. So if I understand correctly, you were homeschooled on paper, but in actuality did not do much work, then you enrolled in public school, but skipped and failed, then you were homeschooled on paper only, but didn't do anything.   Well, I won't jump all over you, because I had a lot of trouble applying myself as a kid too.

Are you homeschooling independently or are you homeschooling through the school system?  If it is through the system you will have to talk to the school and see what can be done, if you are homeschooling independently then you can take placement tests to find out what you know, and just start there and begin moving forward.

You said that when you were homeschooled your teacher did not teach you well, that is strange because it usually a person's parents who teach them when they are homeschooled.  I find it hard to believe that your mom would not make sure you learned the material if she was teaching you.

I guess I don't understand your question totally, but a short answer is that if you are truly homeschooled (not Public School at home) then you should just figure out what you are ready for in each subject and begin, if you are significantly behind in knowledge in a particular subject, then just work six days a week year round in that subject until you catch up.

You can also fast forward through some books by taking the chapter tests first, then going through and studying what you need to know, then retaking the test a second time to check your knowledge, and moving on.

You don't start earning credits until high school, so if you know the basics of math, reading, and writing, there is no reason you can't just start 9th grade at least.

  2. Ummm, I did homeschooling by getting books to teach me in the mail. I know you tried homeschooling but with a teacher?!

My mum just helped me when I got stuck on a problem. Then a year later i went back to school and i was two years ahead.

  3. First, I'd see about getting an assessment for your reading, writing and math skills. See just how far behind you are--if you are at all.

Second, find out about how to get a high school diploma through homeschooling where you live. You could check into online public schools--although you'd probably have to start for grade 9 if you are in the US. In many states, your parents can provide the diploma. Just work out a course of study--either on your own or with your parents (you can check out high schools for where you live for what they require as a starting point) and do the work. You can go as fast as you'd like. If you are not in the US, the rules can be very different.

I'd like to add something here that in most places, there is no passing or failing a grade in homeschooling. You don't have to do the same stuff as in a school, plenty of kids unschool and aren't ever graded. Grades don't matter so much in homeschooling. Whatever your skill level, just keep going. You should NOT have to start back with grade 7 material in reading and writing if you've been reading and writing in other ways the past few years. Also, there's no need to get caught up to grade 10 level for September. You can do more each year and be done "on time" or even early without trying to rush through stuff to be caught up--if you need to get caught up.

  4. honestly, i wouldnt even stress it. youre only young once, so just forget about school and have some fun. youll have the rest of your life to study. what you learn in school isnt really that important anyway.  just focus on what you like and what youre good at. then worry about the other stuff later. for example, if youre good at graphic design, you can get paid good  money, and all you will have to know is graphic design. there is also a growing market now for people who take care of old people, and you dont really need a big education for that. at the same time, you can look at alot of indians with phds, and their working in foreign countries delivering pizza. whats up with that.

  5. I absolutely agree with Glurpy.

If your mum isn't willing to take much responsibility for your education then you need to do it yourself. Write yourself up a list of the subjects you want to study and start doing research to find suitable resources. http://homeschoolreviews.com/ is a good site and you can always get on here and ask opinions on different products. What subjects should you study? Well you have to find out what the law says you must study. Then you have to find out what your Mum insists you study. After that, you can please yourself.

Obviously you need to study English. Everyone needs to be able to read and write. Now what you read and what you write about are entirely up to you. I don't have high school students as yet, so I can't recommend any program, but you should be looking for something that will guide you through a variety of styles of books to read and different styles of writing.

You also need to study maths. This doesn't mean you have to use the textbook you were supposed to be using at school. Remember, the point of education is that you learn the content. Being able to complete an entire chapter of maths problems is pretty useless if you don't even know what geometry is used for. Check out the different programs available for homeschoolers using the link above. Ignore the "grade level" of the materials. You need to study according to your ability. If you haven't got the basics, there's no point moving on.

Why did you start skipping school? Solve that problem and you'll be back on track. You didn't like the teacher? Well you are your teacher now. You didn't like the subjects? Well study something you want to study, the way you want to study it. Read product reviews and see which ones sound exciting. Pick the subjects that interest you and find books or curriculums that present the info in ways that appeal to you. Some people really do like learning from textbooks. Some people use textbooks for some subjects and not for others. Some people have educated themselves perfectly well without ever having used one.

What to do when you get stuck? Find a different book. If you're studying biology and it's making your head spin, try the junior non-fiction section of the library. Having the info presented simply might help you get it, then you can go back to your usual book. Ask your parents for help. Get online and ask. We don't usually take well to people asking for the answer, but are quite happy to help a student learn to think the problem through the right way. Ask librarians. That's what they are there for. They aren't going to teach you your history, but they will be able to help you find the sort of resources you are looking for. If the first one can't help, ask someone else. Your local librarians should know you personally by the end of the month ;)

You probably aren't as far behind as you think. Even if you are, it may not matter. If you hate physics you are never going to choose a career in it are you?

  6. You should look into the Accelerated Christian Education Paces.  It is a wonderful program and so easy to do.  Basically you work at your own pace.  You can go as fast or as slow as you want.  My daughter was in a Christian school and that is what she did. We have decided to leave the school and homeschool for personal reasons but we are still going to do this system because it is so easy to follow.  There are five core subjects: wordbuilder, science, social studies, english, and math plus you can add electives.  My daughter is going to be 11 and I am adding literature this year.  There are 12 workbooks in each subject and when you have completed 12 workbooks in that subject you have done a years worth of work.  A lot of kids at the school were two grades ahead of their age.  If you are a good reader then you can do this program.  You read the booklets and answer questions.  You take checkups to go over what you learned.  At the end of the booklet you take a self test.  If you past the self then you take a pace test.  If you don't pass the pace test then you just have to take it until you pass.  In my daughter's school if she failed a test she had to do the booklet over so that motivated her to do well.  She made high honor roll this year.  You can order the booklets and scoring books online.  Google ACE Paces.  They are only $3.00.  It is a great way to learn and I think it might be what you are looking for.  Good luck.

  7. I went to a school that was on the P.A.C.E system, which is where you basically teach yourself and you go as fast or slow as you need to... pacing yourself. So if you get to work on them you could easily make up the lost grades.  You should look into those... They're christian based but go K-12.  I dunno if that helps or not... but yeah.

  8. Go to connections academy or k12.com they are free you can go at your own pace, they are accredited. Please get back on track it will help you in the long run and education is important.  I hope this helps

  9. try doing 1 grade over the summer each year so that you will graduate sooner
