How can I get certified to teach an online course? Help?

I am looking to apply to teach online courses in my field, and I am wondering if there is a special certification I need to teach online. I've searched for online certification, but all I come up with is online courses for classroom teaching certification (which I already have.)

There is no online teaching certification that is valid between institutions. I've seen a few web sites that sell you training in online teaching, but that's not the same thing.

If you are certified to teach and want to teach students in the field or level for which you are certified, you'll need to find some online sites that are hiring. Start with a search for online schools in your state (because of the certification issue) and look at their hiring information.

(Note: Pay attention to whether you will be an employee or self-employed. Self-employed means about 1/4 of your pay goes to taxes, social security, etc.)

I know there are many opportunities for certified teachers, especially at the high school level.

If your current teaching post has any opportunities for teaching online (even if it's an adult ed, non-credit course), grab one. It will be useful experience. Most online colleges (I've taught at 3) run their own training programs for online instructors. I don't know if the K-12 schools do that as well.
