I work at Old Navy and my manager is always pressuring to repeatedly ask customers to purchase an old navy cards by re-explaining all the benefits of it. But, I know, as just an average person, that people are annoyed when sales people do that.

What should I say, that would not annoy the h**l out of customers ,and actully get them to buy one?

  1. You need to explain to your manager that with how tight things are just be bless that are customers even coming into the store and shopping, keep pressuring them and they will pick another store to spend there money no body wants to be pressured.

  2. Put up a sign that says, "Ask About Our Old Navy Cards", instead of pestering them. If they want one, they'll ask.

  3. Part of your job is to "sell" the ONC, but the customers do not "buy" it, they sign up for it.  There is no annual fee on the card, so they are not spending any more money by getting the card.  The trick to get customers to sign up is to talk about the card naturally, not as if you're repeating a speech about the card like a robot.  Work it into your conversation with the customer.  Yes, I agree it's annoying when we are told to push the card so hard - it not only annoys us as employees to repeat the same thing over and over, it can be annoying for the customers as well because every store out there is trying to get people to sign up for their card.

Most of the time when a customer says "NO" right away, they mean it and it's not worth wasting your breath on it again. However, if you just talk about it smoothly, sometimes getting cards are easy.

For example:  You: Hi how are you today?  Customer: Fine.  You:  Great.  It looks like you found everything ok today (noticing the pile of clothes they just put on your register).  Customer:  yes.  You: do you need any gift receipts for anything here?  Customer: No thanks.  (continue to ring items as you talk).  You: Just to let you know, you could save 10% off today if you're approved for the old navy card (don't stop talking here!!!) and you'd also get coupons for Gap and Banana Republic.  There's also a built-in rewards program on the card where youll earn bucks back to spend at any Gap Inc brand.  Customer (seems hesitant, or might just say No).  You:  It doesnt take long, and you dont even have to fill anything out (with the latest new application process, filling out the application is not necessary -- it is all done on the register now).  All I need is a drivers license and credit card for name verification, but if you are approved, you will receive a statement in the mail for the amount you owe today. ... and take it from there.  Make it sound EASY and FAST.

For those customers that say "Oh I'll never get approved for it", try saying something like "you never know until you try".

Unfortunately, the only thing that sucks is that if the customer is not approved for the card, they get NOTHING.  No discount.  No coupons.
