Question:

How can I get government health insurance for me and my unborn baby in NY when I'm a CA resident?

I'm moving this month to live with relatives in NY with my fiance and need prenatal care for me and my baby. I qualify for CA government assistance and would qualify for NY but am not a resident. I'm 3 months pregnant.

Called the insurance company, I won't be able to keep my CA insurance once I move out of state.

  1. You simply have to have a New York address to prove residency and provide proof of that address. Here is a link that will answer most of your questions :

  2. MC,

You can do all the research before you leave, but until you are actually physically in the state of NY, you most likely won't be able to enroll in the government sponsored health insurance.  Because the programs that cover care for mom's and unborn babies are usually state funded plans, that's why you have to wait until you actually are a resident of the state.

Check out the website:  www.health.state.ny.us which is for the New York State Department of Health, and you should be able to find a toll free number to call to receive information on what you'll need to do to receive the coverage.

    Good luck!

  3. You'll have to change your state of residency.  Health insurance is regulated by each state, so you can't use  CA insurance in NY.  You'll need to apply for NY welfare health insurance.

Or maybe your fiancee would marry you, and you can get added to his health policy through his work.
