Question:

How can I get information about my biological grandparents?

My mother was adopted right out of the hospital. Both her and I have been having medical issues lately. My mother does not want to get in touch with her biological parents for any reason at all.

I however do, for medical purposes only. My grandparents right now are willing to help me out but we are not sure where to start.

My mother was born and adopted in the state of Illinois. Is there any way that I can get in contact with the adoption agency to atleast try to find my biological grandparents for medical history?

If there is how do I go about doing this?

Thanks so much

  1. Try the http://grandparentfoundation.org  Also try the http://donorsyblingregistry.org  and http://bastardnation.org

Persist and get the health information from both biological parents.  All family members will need that vital information in the future.  Good luck!

  2. Here is a link that explains the laws regarding adoption access to records for the state of IL.

    http://laws.adoption.com/statutes/illino...

It appears to me that you grandparents may be able to help you with this but you will may not be able to access any information directly.

check all adoption registries online that you can find and search using your mother's DOB.  Someone may be looking for her.

    Good luck

  3. If you know the agency, I would try to contact them and explain your situation.  I'm sure they will try to assist you if they can.  They may even have some medical history on file that they could provide you without releasing names.

    Good luck to you!

  4. You can go to the Vital Records office of Illinois http://www.idph.state.il.us/vitalrecords... and ask them for the adoption decree and/or the birth certificate on your mom (your mom may need to request this in order for it to be honored).

You could also register on adoption registries to see if you can find biological relatives.  Google for it and see where you meet up with them.

You could also contact a private detective to track down the information.  This will be probably the most effective and efficient way to get information, but it won't be free.  Check around & find someone you're comfortable with who can work within your budget.

One other option is to contact the agency or attorney who facilitated the adoption.
