I would love to work for a fashion magazine, putting looks together for photo shoots or doing any little columns on fashion advice... I am currently working in the fashion industry as an assistant buyer, and my degree is in fashion merchandising. Do I need to go back to school and pursue a degree is fashion journalism???

  1. "A degree in fashion journalism"? You make it sound as if that's a very definite subset of journalism. It's not.

A fishing magazine will probably have the same financial setup and staff as a fashion magazine. Both are mainly funded by advertising. Both rely upon attractive content to attract readers. What's so special about fashion? It's just words and pictures on paper!

That said, you may want to educate yourself as a journalist. Since you already have a college degree, you probably don't need another. However, you should see if you can get something published in a small local newspaper.

Your expertise in fashion could make you attractive to local publications. Vogue probably won't hire you until you've paid your dues for 15 years, but Local Freebie Weekly might appreciate your imput on spring fashions. Heck, you could even do a fashion advice column for them!

If you have the time, intern at a local publication. That's a great opportunity to learn and network.
